Hearing Voice Network Presents

An interactive day where the views of psychiatric survivors will be given equal weight to those of professionals. This will be a festival of explanations for all those who are struggling to do something different both inside and outside mental health services. The focus of the day will be on what can be done on a practical level.

We will see how people can recover outside of psychiatry

Afternoon workshops will include helping with consequences of hearing voices, understanding self harm, working through paranoia, coping with voices, understanding emotional shutdown, evolution of psychiatry and its treatments, campaign to abolish the schizophrenia label (CASL)

Ramboghettouk - i'm sorry you feel you wouldn't be welcome. as far as i'm concerned you are more than welcome, but still - i'm sorry you feel less than enthusiastic about it. I agree that £50 is alot of money, but as the network is really struggling for cash i'm assuming that this is why. Personally i'm hoping there's going to be some people i've not heard from speaking there - the 'usual suspects' are there because people will pay to see them. There are a few names i don't recognise, though, and I for one have never spoken at an event like this. Although i guess i am a 'professional loonie' as after many years of being out of work the London Hearing Voices Groups Project actually employed me! I too, am (partially) complient with meds. I still get quite a few taste hallucinations and visual disturbances tho. No worries about wanting to avoid it tho - it's horses for courses (or something like that). If it's not for you, no probs



Coricurry - I tend to see my voices/visions/highs/lows etc etc not so much as part of an illness, but the result of a combination of trauma and the way that my brain has a tendency to handle stress. When i'm feeling at my worst, i often feel that i'm part of an experiment - but i think that this is my brain's way of playing on my darkest fear. My experiences have led me to really value being in control of myself. An experiment terrifies me because it's the ultimate in losing control. A person from my Hearing Voices Group in Leicester used to say 'What you fear, you hear' and that doesn't seem too far from the mark. After all, who knows your darkest fears more than yourself? Still, everyone has their own understanding of what they're experiencing, and that's fine. We're all experts in our own experiences, and noone has a right to say that one beleif is superior over another one. The campaign to abolish the schizophrenia label is an interesting one.



Denizen - I'm not sure that they mean by emotional shutdown, but after the conference i'll post again and let you know what they've said. My interpretation would be that when someone's overwhelmed they can often shutdown emotionally. I do this. I tend to make patterns in my environment and am almost in a trance. It's a way of 'going inside' and bringing down walls around me so that the outside doesn't get in. Whether this is the same thing or not, i'll let you know



Anyways, i for one and very looking forward to this. It should be interesting, and i'm looking forward to hearing some new ideas
